I ride my bike a lot in Boston, all year long. When you ride every day, all year, the elements start to lose their menace. Sometimes I'd forget my rain coat, and it would start pouring at some point throughout the day, but I still have to get to school or work or home, so I go out into the rain and get soaked. But at some point you couldn't get much wetter if you jumped into the ocean, so it's better to just smile and laugh at the situation than grumble. That's where this song came from, but it became about a few other things in the process of being written.
lyrics
Rain fell 'cross Commonwealth Ave and
Soaked deep, I can't help but laugh
I smile as people run to the train
to stay dry.
Wind blew me into the street
People struggled to stand on their feet
I go back to a place in the past and
I recall a time…
where I stand, I stand on the back porch
by myself
I stand there with a stone in my hand
And I think, I think,
How this is like my life,
I turn a stone over while listening to rain
The earth shook and people fell in
Cell phones, computers, and sin
And I find comfort in storms for they recall…
the times that I could rest
And I wonder, I wonder,
where do I belong?
On the back porch, with a stone, all alone?
Is there someone, someone,
to stand there with me?
To hold the stone and in turn let me hold theirs.
Hide my young machine
in time you'll see the truth
Sure, hide, my young machine
Your life is all you'll lose
Wait, my young machine,
the time has come to quit
Wait, my young machine,
You've been fooled
A damp smell foreshadows the rain
A quiet world and light wind remain
A solitude as heavy as haze
alone as those who smile in a storm
And I stand, I stand,
on the back porch by myself.
I stand there with a stone in my hand.
And I think, I think,
How this is like my life;
I turn a stone over, and think, "It's only rain."
Just think, just think: it's only rain.
