I wrote this song when I was at home for the summer, and my parents had the news on all the time. I'm pretty sure there was a murder or kidnapping story on, and I was thinking about the surreal experience of seeing the pictures they show of smiling faces while the people were living, juxtaposed with some awful story about their death. Reconciling the two is just a strange experience, and I got to thinking about death in general, and the way the news portrays the world as so, so awful, but day to day things aren't so bad, at least for me (though they may be for some people)
lyrics
Did she like school? Did she have lots of friends, or
just one or two that she could count on?
Was her life a bore, or did she have lots of hobbies?
Or love her parents? It seems they really loved her.
In the woods, there is a stream gone running
They found her body floating there
Now they show her smiling face and
We wonder what she's gonna miss
In the sun, we are running faster
We'll be gone as if from some disaster
People will erase all the sins that we've collected
I know as well as you I've led no perfect life
When people die! We want so bad to love them!
But when they're alive! It's easy to resent them!
Pick a life, look at it closely!
You might find something to root for!
Don't wait for death to look past our failures,
And don't forget them when we die!
And every day
I hear from the kitchen
The news at ten
The world seems death infested.
Stay inside
the world's so dangerous
don't you know you're gonna be killed?
The waterside collapsed, she's gone
His arm got cut off out the window
The lightning struck him
a tornado killed her
The ground fell out
below their feet there
A good kid murdered
Around the corner
Don't you know the whole world hates you!
But I walk out side
And it seems so peaceful!
The wind blows gently past my arms.
The sky so blue
Is it really so bad?
Even when it's raining?
